Frequently Asked Questions
What are Open Streets?
Open Streets are programs that temporarily open streets to people and close them to cars. People traffic replaces car traffic and the streets become ‘paved parks’, where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can come out and improve their health. They are held all over the world.
Where will Move-A-Bull City open streets event be held?
Through the heart of the Bull City. From noon to 4pm, we will temporarily open a 1.2 mile stretch of Blackwell, Corcoran, and Foster streets through the heart of downtown Durham. From the intersection of Blackwell Street and Morehead Avenue on the south end (near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park) to the intersection of Foster Street and Trinity Avenue on the north (near the start of the Ellerbee Creek Trail), those streets will be closed to car and truck traffic for the duration of the event. Drivers will be able to cross the corridor at Pettigrew Street, Ramseur Street, and Morgan Street.
who is hosting the event?
Teamwork Makes the Streets Work: Bike Durham, the City of Durham Transportation Department, and the Durham County Public Health Department’s Partnership for a Healthy Durham are teaming up to make our streets healthier, safer, and more joyful — for folks of all ages and abilities.
what is the purpose of the event?
Safety First, Fun Always - Ever wonder what it feels like to walk, bike, or roll on a street that puts people first? Now’s your chance. At Move-A-Bull City, you’ll see — and feel — what safer streets could look like in downtown Durham and beyond. By clearing out the cars, we’re making space to breathe deep, stretch out, and connect with neighbors — no fumes, no stress, just fresh energy. Durham residents have big dreams for more livable neighborhoods, and this event is one way we’re bringing that vision to life. When the streets belong to people, they become places to gather, celebrate, and play.
will there be activities?
