WHAT’S
HAPPENING
DAY-OF:

On Blackwell, Corcoran, and Foster Streets, from Morehead Avenue to Trinity Avenue, the streets will belong to you from noon to 4pm for however you want to move - walking, running, biking, rolling, or even boot scooting.  Most intersections will be completely blocked to car traffic and volunteers and police will keep everyone safe at the crossings at the train tracks, and Pettigrew, Ramseur, and Morgan Streets.  

All along the corridor, many businesses will be open and welcoming you.  There will also be more than 100 partners along the street to keep you engaged and having fun:

AARP Vision Zero Zone

The City of Durham Transportation Department and Bike Durham will have a pop-up demonstration of a protected intersection and protected bike lanes at Blackwell Street and Jackie Robinson Drive.  Attendees will have an opportunity to use sidewalk chalk to decorate the intersection.  Everyone will also have an opportunity to shape Durham’s transportation priorities through the Durham Bike+Walk Plan Update.

Other activity partners will include:  AARP North Carolina, REI Durham, East Coast Greenway.

Community Heroes Zone hosted by SafeKids Durham

This activity zone, on Blackwell Street between Jackie Robinson Drive and William V Bell Way, features a “touch-a-truck” activity, an exciting family-friendly opportunity that features interactive, hands-on learning experiences for children of all ages to interact with first responders and transit workers and the vehicles they use. 

Participants will include: Duke Life Flight, GoDurham, GoTriangle, Duke Police Department, Durham Police Department, Durham County Sheriff’s Office, Durham County Office of Emergency Management, and Durham Fire Department.

Google Fiber Art Zone hosted by Pinhook 

Located between Ramseur Street and Main Street, and spilling into the parking lot on the east side of Blackwell, this zone will feature local artists and a DJ.  Some artists will offer make-and-take opportunities and others will be selling their creations.  

Participants will include: Anthropocene On Fire, Art By Janicke, Dajo Pottery, Durham Arts Council, Dragonfly Dreams, Eclectic Art by Karen, Grey Spiral Designs, Inspired Design, Kay Piti , LoveJones Co, Riven Raven Workshop, Rose & Lee, Super G Print Lab, Sweetbun, Deco, Tiffany Coley, Wild Thorn Collective, Mayrena Granados, Student-Made UNC, Innervisions Flow, Liberty Arts and Sunny Spot Pottery.

Kind Kitchen will host cooking demonstrations on Corcoran Street.

Super G Print Lab, in collaboration with Bike Durham, will be offering the first 150 guests a free Move-A-Bull City tote bag, screen-printed as you watch.

Government Connections Zone 

In CCB Plaza between Chapel Hill and Parrish Streets, you’ll engage with representatives of your local City and County governments and programs and regional agencies, including: 

Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, Durham County Department of Public Health, Durham Soil and Water Conservation District, Family Connects Durham, Fast Track Cities Durham, ParkDurham, Durham Parks & Recreation, Durham Planning and Development, Durham Transportation, Durham Water Management, Triangle West TPO, Central Pines Regional Council, Eno Animal Hospital, and Animal Protection Society of Durham.

Duke Health Wellness / Fitness Zone

The Wellness/Physical Fitness Zone, between Chapel Hill and Morgan Streets, will have classes and demonstrations, screenings and information.

The tentative schedule for fitness classes at the intersection of W Chapel Hill Street and Corcoran Street:

  • 12:30 Body Weight Conditioning circuit led by Tribal Fit 

  • 1:30 Zumba Class led by Benniegirl Healthy Lifestyle

Other partners will include: Community Health Coalition, Communities in Partnership, Book Harvest, Myo Fitness and P2, Threshold Club House, BlueCross BlueShieldNC, Active Bodez, Triangle Rock Climbing, i9 Sports, Bull City Running, Revel, Humana, Recess Yoga, Beltane Strength & Fitness, Collective Movement, Durham County Hands Only CPR, and Duke CPR Study Team.

Michel Family Foundation Rolling Zone

The Rolling Zone, along Foster Street at Durham Central Park, is the place to be for biking, skating (boarding and in-line), or riding a scooter.  There will be an off-road cycling course hosted by Triangle Off-Road Cycling (TORC), skateboarding obstacles hosted by Manifest Skate Shop, a bike polo demonstration by Raleigh Bike Polo, free bike tune-ups by the Durham Bike Co-op, and free helmets distributed by Lime scooters.

Other partners will include: Black Girls Do Bike, Oaks & Spokes, and Bike Durham. 

Move-A-Bull City Open Streets merchandise will be on sale at the Bike Durham tent in the Rolling Zone.

Also in Durham Central Park 

There will be 13 food and drink trucks: Bobastic, Chophouse BBQ, Dan Grayson, Fresh AF Vegan, Mesa’s, Mezcalito, Jay’s Italian Ice, YoYo Froyo, Tacos Garcia 2, Mr. A’s Beignets, Rose’s Noodles Dumplings & Sweets, Empanadas and More, and Shawerma Bowl.

There will be dance performance and classes in front of the mural wall.  The schedule is:

  • 12:30 African dance class by Intuitive Movement 

  • 1:30 Hip Hop Dance performance / class by Empower School of Movement

  • 3:00 Movement For All Class by American Dance Festival  

PlayStreets HQ

Along Foster Street from Corporation to Trinity Avenue will be PlayStreets HQ with a focus on fun activities and information for the whole family.  

Partners include: Big Bear Bounce, Bull City Fit, SkyZone Durham, Community School of Digital and Visual Arts, Cultivating Resistance Herbals, Families & Communities Rising, Mettlesome Theater, NC Cooperative Extension, South Durham Little League, The Little Gym of Durham, The Rickhouse, Nectar Cafe, and WHOLE Schools Movement of the DPS Foundation.

DPS Safe Routes to School team will be guiding young bike riders through a Traffic Garden to learn biking safety practices, Triangle Curling will have a demonstration space where you can try your hand at gliding a stone, and The Wonder Lab will have an astronaut training obstacle course.

At the intersection of Foster and Geer Streets there will be a performance space.  The tentative schedule is:

  • 12:00 Second Shift A Capella

  • 1:45 Old North State Jam

  • 3:00 Senior Center dance class (tentative)

Thrift-A-Bull Market
